● Oxfam Mexico´s assessment team will deploy two humanitarian action teams: one in Morelos and one more in Puebla.

● Oxfam International Confederation´s global group of humanitarian experts is on its way to become part of the response.

● The surveillance of the response in Oaxaca continues in order to guarantee a fair and non-discretionary use of the State´s resources.

After the earthquake of magnitude 7.1 that struck Mexico on September 19th at 13:14 hrs. with its epicenter in Axochiapan, Morelos, the team of Oxfam Mexico has decided to deploy two humanitarian action teams in the states of Morelos and Puebla in coordination with Oxfam International Humanitarian Response team, which is already traveling to Mexico City. Oxfam Mexico´s and Oxfam International Confederation´s Humanitarian Response teams count with experts in water, sanitation and hygiene promotion (WASH), food security, and livelihoods in emergencies and protection.

So far, the death of 225 persons (94 in Mexico City, 71 in Morelos, 43 in Puebla, 12 in the State of Mexico, 4 in Guerrero, and 1 in Oaxaca) and about 700 injured people have been
reported in Mexico City, in addition to damaged and collapsed buildings. After the earthquake of September 19 th and until 11 am today, the 20 th , 31 aftershocks have been recorded. This is the second earthquake affecting Mexico in less than two weeks after that which occurred on September 7 th of magnitude 8.2 with its epicenter in Pijijiapan, Chiapas and which severely affected communities in the southern region of Mexico.

These actions took place after the efforts of the Humanitarian Observation Mission in Oaxaca in which a group of organizations of the civil society and Oxfam Mexico visited communities living in extreme poverty in the Isthmus area and witnessed the lack of government coordination in regard to the distribution of the humanitarian help and the discretionary use of the scarce resources that have reached the zone. The most recent earthquake and its impacts in Mexico City, Morelos, Puebla, and other areas places the responsible, transparent, and effective management of humanitarian help at the center of the agenda once again.
