Pan Mass Challenge - Fighting Cancer by the mile!

I will be running the Big Sur marathon on April 26, 2020 to raise money for the American Cancer Society. The American Cancer Society is the nationwide voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem through research, education, advocacy, and service.

Chronic Lyme disease is UNBELIEVABLE! If you haven't experienced it yourself or had/have a loved one who has it, you wouldn't believe it because it doesn't exist! Lyme disease is an infection that is transmitted through the bite of a tick infected with a bacterium called Borrelia burgdorferi. Lyme disease has so many faces that it is hard to be recognized by experienced doctors. Here are some of the most common manifestations of Lyme: erythema migrant, arthritis, carditis, meningitis/encephalitis. In addition to the above, there are numerous non-specific symptoms, such as: rashes, fatigue, pain, stiffness, or swollen joints, headaches, dizziness, fever, night sweats and sleep disturbance, cognitive decline, sensitivity to light, vision changes, and many other neurological problems. Lyme disease has been called the new great imitator. It is really confusing because there are atypical presentations. Lyme can be difficult to diagnose. Tests are not always reliable. When you are being treated, one cannot be assured that the infection agent is invariably eradicated with the bacteriologic cure. Some people relapse following recommended treatment regiments. The agent of Lyme is highly complex and has many tactics to evade destruction by an antimicrobial agent and the immune system. ….here is a real life lyme story.... "I was bitten by an earwig in the spring of last year. In 40 days after the event (the period required by the immune system to respond) my results were false negative. In December 2018, for totally unrelated reasons, I made a second test that turned out positive for Borrelia grainy and Borrelia afzelin. Both manifest as arthritis and neurological symptoms. A friend of mine asked me once: He: “Have you ever watched D-r House?” I said: “Yep, some of the episodes”. He said: “Watch it! There are so many episodes in which during the diagnosis conversations the doctors come to suspect Lyme as the underlying cause of so many and different symptoms.” Well, I’m there - patient that faced this diagnosis first person, on my way to get treatment and fight back. With your help and engagement, I hope to get better! What I offer in return is my time and dedication to create greater awareness, understanding, and (hopefully) prevention of Lyme disease. You know that paradox about the unstoppable force and the immovable object? Well, my 8-year-old cousin Amelia is that unstoppable force. Just over a year ago, she met an immovable object in the form of an arteriovenous malformation, resulting in a brain-bleed and a stroke. Most people don't necessarily take well to these kinds of events, and most seven-year-olds don't encounter these events. But most people, I guess, are not an unstoppable force. Her whole family was living day-by-day right beside her, where today was always a gift but tomorrow never a promise. No matter how unstoppable Amelia was (and is!), she could not move this object on her own. And that's where Boston Children's comes in. They kept her stable; they kept her family stable; and they, along with Amelia and her family fighting around her, kept her alive, kept us all living. Amelia still keeps us living. How does anybody repay this? I'm running all 26.22 miles of the Boston Marathon because my time, energy, and money are the least I can give in order to say Thank You. If you have a moment, please trust that Boston Children's Hospital will turn your spare change into a family's hope and a child's future. They certainly did that for Amelia.

Techapalooza- Banding Together to Fight Cancer. Techapalooza is a fundraiser that brings together 7 bands comprised of talented musicians who work in the I.T. sector. The bands perform in front of an enthusiastic crowd who will vote for their favourite band to be crowned “Fan Favourite”…and while rockin’ the night away, we’ll be raising money for the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation. To date, Techapalooza has raised over $743,000 for CancerCare Manitoba Foundation. 100% of the net proceeds for this event go to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, where all funds stay in Manitoba to support cancer research, education and patient support programs.

HCP works to improve the quality of life for individuals and families in some of the hardest-to-reach locations by increasing access to affordable, high-quality eye care. Special emphasis is placed on cataract - a completely avoidable cause of blindness, and the leading cause of blindness in the world. Cataract blindness can be reversed overnight by a surgery that takes less than 10 minutes, at a material cost of $25. However, without a collaborative and the sustained effort, treatable blindness will persist, robbing communities of laborers, denying children education, causing $49BN in lost productivity for low/ moderate income countries every year. The Himalayan Cataract Project (HCP) is a non-profit organization founded in 1995 by ophthalmologists Dr. Geoffrey Tabin and Dr. Sanduk Ruit, with the mission to cure needless blindness with the highest quality care at the lowest cost. To accomplish these goals, HCP uses a proven model of high-quality ophthalmic care, education and the establishment of a world-class ophthalmic infrastructure.

Our neighbor and dear friend, Tommy Oliver, lost his battle with Hepatosplenic T-cell Lymphoma, a rare aggressive and highly mortal disease resulting from a life-long battle with Crohn's Disease treatments. Tommy was 21 years old. Honoring Tommy's wishes, his family, headed by his dad, Jack Oliver, formed the Tommy Kid Foundation. The foundation is dedicated to finding better treatments and cures to these diseases. Our mission is to advocate for patients misdiagnosed, incorrect treatments and to help the patient navigate through the medical system. In hopes to save lives such as my neighbor Tommy. I am on the board of the foundation and very passionate about this cause.

Each year, over 40,000 women will die of breast cancer in the United States. Although prevention, research, and treatment have made tremendous strides over the past two decades, breast cancer remains a major threat to women worldwide. It is the most common cancer in women, regardless of race or ethnicity. While white women are slightly more likely to develop breast cancer than are African American women, African American women are more likely to die of the disease. Asian, Latina, and Native American women have a lower risk than of developing breast cancer, but stigma within Hispanic and Latino groups prevents them from seeking care and enrolling in clinical research. This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, join Braze in providing support to organizations doing critical work in the fight against breast cancer.

Health & Sport Fund Top 5 Reasons why you should consider helping the Austin Angelfish meet our fundraising goal: The Austin Angelfish is the only competitive synchronized #swimming team in Central Texas. We have swimmers that travel to #Austin from Dripping Springs, Cedar Park, Onion Creek and as far as Salado! If you are not familiar with #Austin, this is a huge geographic spread or one team! 2. Not only is #SynchronizedSwimming one of the toughest Olympic sports (imagine working out and competing at 100% while holding your breath), it builds tough, STRONG people who will go on to do great things! Synchronized Swimming is considered to be the ULTIMATE team sport! 3. We compete at the National and Junior Olympic level and we are beyond committed! 4. We are a very diverse group of girls age 8 to 18 and have 44 swimmers who speak at least 7 different languages and more than half speak at least 2 languages. 5. Our coaches are VOLUNTEERS! Our head coach, Cheryl Cook has been volunteering more than 20 hours per week for 26+ years! Legit commitment to the sport coming from ALL of our coaches! We are doing a 21 Day Fitness Challenge and Synchro-A-Thon to raise $12,000. 1. To offset cost for swimmer's who need financial assistance. We want to make synchronized swimming available to all athletes in Central Texas. 2. To help offset the expenses our monthly dues do not cover (ex: rental time at four 25 yard, deep water pools year round, insurance, underwater sound equipment etc.)
